UI Designer Mid – Design System:
We’re looking for a passionate; skilled; and ambitious Mid UI Designer to join our Design System team.
As a Mid UI Designer at the UK’s largest supermarket; you’ll be working on a complex; sophisticated design system that supports and works hand in hand with our product design teams. You’ll discover new opportunities; creating intuitive and effective solutions that improve every stage of our user’s design workflow from Figma to engineering handover. You’ll weigh business goals with our colleagues’ expectations; creating components and Figma library solutions that exceed both. Our Digital Design System is central to our design vision at Tesco; so you’ll need experience working on one. You’ll know how to fail fast; get back up; and try again.

About the role:
- Collaborate with your team members to design and maintain our platform libraries using variants; tokens; and other organizing and scaling principles resulting in flexible; reusable components for our platform libraries that are suitable for both designers to use in Figma and be technically feasible for our engineers.
- Support processes to ensure the continued relevance and best user experience of the design system; including research and testing its effectiveness.
- Work hand in hand with the product teams to bring the design system to life inside all UI projects and help evolve our Digital Design System based on user needs.
- Work with product teams to identify opportunities for simplifying designs across products across the different business areas to keep our design system lean and efficient.
- Deliver valuable; high-quality; and consistent work without sacrificing speed.
- Accurately estimate the timing and effort required to do your work.
- Contribute to end user documentation describing the standards and best practices of our component library as a reference for our users.
- Create and maintain engineering handover documentation. Work closely with engineering teams to understand feasibility of design ideas and ensure review of design implementation at key stages of the development cycle.
- Be the voice of the Digital Design System (DDS) for designers in other teams; helping them use the system to produce brilliant work.
- Use Figma and Engineering analytics to help inform your work.
- Promote inclusive design practices and deliver accessible (AA)designs and components.
- Contribute to the end-to-end UI process activities relevant to the design system workflow.
- Collaborate with different disciplines inside product teams; working closely with UX & UI designers; researchers; UX writers; engineers; product managers; data analysts; and business stakeholders to explore; use; test and contribute to the design system.
- Champion human-centred design inside and outside of your team.
- Know how to validate your designs via A/B testing; unmoderated; usability testing; etc.
- Help to facilitate workshops; run appropriate conceptualisation and participatory design sessions.
- Help other disciplines understand the value the design system can bring to a project to build the best products.
- Continuously seek to improve design processes inside and outside of your team to gain efficiency; remove obstacles; and simplify workflows.
- Provide feedback to other designers to help strengthen your team and Tesco as a whole.
- Help your teammates build expertise; strong decision-making skills; and empathy for our users.
- Work with the Design Manager to cultivate a positive; supportive; and inclusive team culture.
- 3-5 years UI design experience.
- A positive; constructive can-do attitude.
- Self-motivated and good organisational and time-management skills
- A good ability to simplify the complex.
- You bring a systematic design approach to your work
- A strong; well-curated portfolio demonstrating some experience working on a design system.
- A passion for the latest design; AI; and engineering technology
- The strong level of proficiency with the latest versions of Figma.
- Good understanding of delivering latest WCAG compliant designs.
- Ability to constructively critique design.
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- An awareness of existing design systems such as Material design; and Fluent Design & an obsession with digital trends and design
- Experience collaborating closely with multiple disciplines; including product and engineering.
- Proactively share and communicate design expertise and knowledge with your peers and other teams.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills; and the ability to present to all levels of seniority within the organisation.
- A good understanding of the end-to-end iterative design double diamond process.
- Proficiency with current industry design and collaboration tools such Miro etc.
- Strong visual & interaction design sensibility
- Exceptional attention to detail; and a passion for building quality products
- A good knowledge of the latest design and prototyping tools and technologies.
- Passion for solving problems while balancing all facets of a user experience.
It’s an advantage if you also have:
- Grad or Master from Design School is a is a strong advantage
- Some engineering background is a strong advantage.
- Previous experience in the retail sector.
- Experience in a range of high-profile design projects in a customer & business facing environment.
