About the role

Tesco are undertaking an ambitious and exciting program to bring the customer and colleague checkout experience in house. With over 50,000 tills globally, over 15,000 of which are outside of the UK (i.e. in Ireland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary) the opportunity to create a bespoke checkout experience that draws customers back again and again has significant bottom line potential in terms of improving the customer journey and step-changing our ability to innovate for our customers.

We have great Product, Engineering and Programme teams who are responsible for building the technology solutions (both the “Retail Platform” of Enterprise Services, and the User Interface that colleagues and customers will engage with) needed to support and deliver the Tesco Till initiative. Great progress has already been made in the UK and Ireland, where there are already many tills live in stores demonstrating the potential.  However, we have challenging timelines to extend this to all our International markets and hence need you to help create the plan to make this a reality.

This vacancy is to lead the stream of work aimed at landing the first major step of moving the international market’s till systems onto the Retail Platform, a stream called the “Interim Till”.  This involves the first step of deploying parts of the Retail Platform onto tills in all countries and through that proving that they are ready and accurate, at all necessary volumes, to unlock future value streams (including the move to Tesco Till, but also numerous other initiatives requiring the Retail Platform).

Great progress has already been made in Ireland, however there is more to do to complete that work here and then to focus on the Central European countries.

The outcome of this this stream of work will be to have:

  • Proven our ability to extend the Retail Platform outside of the UK.
  • Delivered a “member based pricing” proposition to customers and/or colleagues in these markets
  • Have planned the route for other initiatives that will utilise the Retail Platform, including Tesco Till, Online Cutover and others.

This will require management of a number of streams of work, including but not limited to:

  • Concurrent development across Quote, Stored Value and Identity
  • Finance “readiness” for this change including Sales Tender and Stock Valuation.
  • Storeline test, and potentially development, alongside the API development

It will also require dependency management across:

  • Price Transformation, specifically activity required to ensure that Product is available in these countries.
  • Online Cutover.

You will be responsible for

Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:

  • Deliver programmes with business and/or technical risks
  • Optimise or use a standard programme delivery methodology for delivering programme goals (e.g. agile, waterfall, iterative)
  • Bring together, coordinate and energise virtual technology teams to deliver programme goals
  • Create and track a plan to deliver the programme goals, including the technical implementation plan
  • Understand trade-offs and resulting impacts; make impacts visible to Product, Infrastructure or Engineering for the right decision to be made
  • Managing dependencies, delivery timelines and implementations plans, using my knowledge of technical architecture
  • Appreciating and responding to delivery challenges, using my knowledge of engineering best practices and/or infrastructure implementations
  • Understand technology concepts, grasp new ones quickly and appreciate their implications on delivery
  • Effectively manage major incidents, ensuring stakeholders are updated with the right information to drive the correct decisions
  • Collaborate with the Product and Engineering teams to define annual budgetary requirements
  • Build positive relationships with suppliers & external stakeholders to deliver software or professional services
  • Coach peers and other roles, teaching where required, on methodologies and programme management tools

You will need

An ideal candidate must have demonstrated below key skills in their current and past roles:

  • Have a proven record of accomplishment in delivering technology and/or infrastructure; having done so across multiple teams in multiple geographies
  • Have experience of building credible relationships and influencing senior management & leadership teams
  • Strong Project, Stakeholder & Programme management skills
  • Excellent communication & influencing skills and adoptability to changes
  • A technical interest and curiosity to understand and support the most effective path through the parallel development across the different APIs.  A business and customer-centric interest to match this, to identify opportunities to unlock incremental value as you end to end solution materialises (i.e. over and above “Member based pricing” propositions in the Interim Till state.
