If you want to be part of an exciting new function in Tesco, Commercial Operations and Strategy could be the place for you. The function provides the strategy, insight, training, processes and systems to allow our buying teams to deliver the right product at the right price for our customers today, and in the future.

You will be driving transformation in a fast paced and energetic environment, working with key stakeholders across all the teams in Tesco.

You could be working on anything from: setting our pricing strategy; deciding how we display products on the shelf; building colleague capability; improving our Supplier relationships; managing large scale change projects; or, shaping our promotional planning.

There are four key areas within the function:

Process and Systems Development:

  • Look for new ways to simplify the way all our Buying teams work today, and transform how we will work in the future
  • Improve business processes and Operations to allow our Buyers to focus on delivering the best products for our customers
  • Work closely with our Suppliers to ensure our processes simplify their relationships with Tesco
  • Projects range from standardizing our administration process, to simplifying complex cross-functional processes and systems, and developing brand new tools and systems with our Technology teams


  • Build training and capability plans for our colleagues and suppliers
  • Set the strategy for our Shared Services across the world
  • Manage the alignment of all change activities across the Product function
  • Ensure legal compliance across the Product function
  • Create and manage a world class back office

Commercial Strategy and Pricing:

  • Defines the commercial strategy
  • Shapes the pricing and promotions policy
  • Provides insight to the Product Teams
  • Shapes the trade plan

Space, Range and Display

  • Drive the space strategy for Tesco
  • Ensure stores have the right space and range to maximize sales
  • Provide insight and analysis to ensure our customers can purchase the products they are looking for in each store format
  • Create innovative visual merchandising displays

Process and Systems development:

The team includes people with a wide range of skills and backgrounds, but they all share an appetite for driving changes that can streamline our business and make things better for our customers. You will need to be able to manage the complexity of delivering business improvements whilst simultaneously developing strategic solutions for the future. We look for people who have an eye for detail, as well as the ability to think about the bigger picture. We need people that can solve complex problems and who can manage priorities, issues and decisions, whilst engaging with stakeholders. An ability to effectively communicate is essential.

Operations team:

This team defines the operational framework for our Product division. You could be working on improving our relationship with Suppliers, developing the operational routines to make our buying processes simpler, building the capability of our Commercial Function and managing change projects across Product. In addition, the team ensure that we are legally compliant. We look for strong project management or training skills with the ability to work collaboratively across functions, with a key focus on simplification.

Commercial Strategy and Pricing

This is a dynamic team with a broad skill set and coming from a variety of backgrounds, with a shared goal to support the Product team to deliver better ranges and promotions for our customers. You need to be able to think creatively, enjoy a fast paced environment, thrive on engaging stakeholders at all levels and continually look for ways to simplify our processes.

Space, range and display

In Space, Range and Display you will be involved in managing a process from start to finish in a diverse set of roles that will give you exposure to a variety of other functions across the business. SRD is split into different teams, each with its own specialized focus. The Display team is at the heart of the function, building product displays that inspire our customers and are easy for stores to implement. The focus is on bringing display briefs to life in store and supporting product innovation with the buying teams. The Space and Insights team drive the space strategy for the business, analysing how we can best tailor the space and range to get the right offers and services for every community that our stores serve.
